The Ultimate Guide to Large Format Print Specifications
Designing a business card is very different from designing a 10-meter building banner. This guide explains the specific technical requirements for large format print, including signage, banners, and exhibition displays.
1. The "Viewing Distance" Rule for Resolution
Standard print (like flyers) requires 300 DPI because it is viewed from arm's length. Large format print is viewed from much further away, meaning the required resolution decreases as the size increases.
Resolution Guidelines by Viewing Distance:
- Close (Up to 1 meter): e.g., Point of Sale, Roll-up Banners. Required: 150 - 300 DPI
- Medium (1 to 3 meters): e.g., Shop Fascias, Exhibition Walls. Required: 100 - 150 DPI
- Far (Over 3 meters): e.g., Building Banners, Billboards. Required: 50 - 72 DPI
2. Scaling Your Artwork (Working at Scale)
Design software like Adobe Illustrator has a maximum canvas size (often around 5.7 meters). If your signage is larger than this, you cannot design it at 100% scale.
The Solution: Work at a percentage scale.
- 10% Scale: Design at 10% of the final size. Ensure your image resolution is 10x higher than the final required DPI. (e.g., If you need 100 DPI final, place images at 1000 DPI in your 10% scale document).
- 25% or 50% Scale: Often easier for math. Just remember to communicate the scale clearly to your printer in the file name (e.g.,
ShopSign_5000x1000mm_At25Percent.pdf).
3. Vector vs Raster for Large Format
Because large format print is stretched across vast areas, Vector graphics (EPS, AI, SVG, vector PDF) are crucial.
- Logos and Text: Must ALWAYS be vector. Vectors can be scaled to the size of the moon without losing quality.
- Photographs: Must be raster (JPG, TIFF). Ensure they meet the viewing distance DPI requirements mentioned above.
4. Understanding Rigid Materials
When ordering signage, understanding the substrate (material) is as important as the artwork.
Foamex (PVC Foam)
Lightweight, rigid PVC. Great for indoor exhibition panels or short-term outdoor signage. Available in 3mm, 5mm, and 10mm.
Dibond (Aluminium Composite)
A polyethylene core sandwiched between two aluminum sheets. Extremely rigid, rust-proof, and weather-resistant. The industry standard for permanent shop fascias.
5. Bleed and Safe Margins for Large Format
Large format items often require larger bleed areas because the finishing processes (like hemming banners or folding canvas) consume more material.
- Rigid Boards (Foamex/Dibond): Standard 3mm to 5mm bleed.
- PVC Banners: Requires 25mm to 50mm bleed for hemming and eyelets. Keep crucial text at least 50mm away from the edge to avoid eyelets punching through your logo.
